The starting point for every successful enterprise is a convincing business idea. It is the first milestone in the process of setting up a high-growth company.
Consider the following basic needs when developing an idea to implement (your idea should probably satisfy at least one of these needs):
Most people need to be:
- Happy – nobody wants to be unhappy. People are different however and therefore the saying: “Different strokes, for different folks”.
- Wealthy – if you just consider the many schemes and scams available and how people “fall” for the ridiculous in the hope of becoming wealthy. The national Lotto is a good example of this.
- Healthy – due to higher stress levels most people realise that they need to be more healthy. Gyms, light margarine, organic food, diet cold drinks, etc.
- Slim – look at the many advertisements about some or other slimming product or programme. Most people who are trying to lose weight, have tried a number of different products, and will keep on trying new methods.
- Clever – who doesn’t want to be clever? Can you provide a product to make people smarter? Think of training courses, informative books, CD’s, Internet, etc.
- Popular – can you think of a product or service that might make somebody more popular? Designer clothes, visiting exotic locations, etc.
- Respected – people are respected for different reasons. It might be because of a sought after qualification, an expensive car, being a member of a certain club/association or for various other reasons. Can you satisfy this need?
- Admired – many products satisfy this need, from clothing, motor vehicles, company you keep, houses, etc.
Try to add to this list. People need convenience, they need to relax, they need to be loved, etc. The same applies to society in general. Can you think of a need a government usually satisfies but often satisfies it inadequately? Can you satisfy this need and make a profit? Think: Refuse removal (dial-a-drum), protecting citizens (security services), solar energy and toxic waste removal.
I’m adding to your list :
People need to be Innovative – Innovation creates wealth. If you want to be innovative, create what you want to use. Innovation is not an event. It’s a process. The purpose of innovation is not cool products and cool technologies, but ‘happy people’.
Have a wonderful day !

Good one Ansie. I especially like your comment about “happy people”. Innovation is not meant to give you, the manager / owner a warm feeling, it is meant to delight and excite your customers. A business is nothing without customers. Enjoy your day and thanks for your comment. Gary.
